Carnaval at the local indian market.

We noticed this extraordinary decoration in the local Indian market adorning the little shrine. Every type of fruit, vegetable and bread was suspended by rope from the ceiling of the market. There were also many balloons and streamers to add the extra colour. The effect was very impressive and it is all part of the Ayacuchan Carnaval celebrations. The small shrine dedicated to Mary is common place in such buildings, as also are the continually replaced lighted candles and fresh flowers. We presumed that the photo of the venerable male hanging on the pillar would have something to do with the actual development of this particular market or area.

The lady in the spotted hat is purchasing one of my favourite early morning snacks, a very sweet bread on a stick! In fact it is so sweet the owner of the stall is continually waving the bees away!
