No chocolate Easter eggs in Ayacucho!

Much to my dismay I have discovered that the chocolate Easter egg tradition that I have been brought up in to love and enjoy does not exist in this part of the world! When we enquired about where we could purchase some Easter eggs as gifts for various people we were told that they do not exist.

What do they do for Easter? Well the toffee apple has appeared, and has appeared with a vengeance. Apparently the good old toffee apple replaces the Easter egg in Ayacucho and surrounds.

In the last week you would not believe the amount of toffee apple sellers that are roaming the streets, you would also not believe the variety of colours – the standard red followed by green, yellow, cream and I even saw pink ones! However, the top of the range so far were the complete bunches of grapes coated in bright green toffee.

The only good thing about the absence of the chocolate Easter egg is that my waist line will benefit.
